One of the events our place is famous for, especially among Catholics, is the Pentecostal pilgrimage in Csíksomlyó (Şumuleu Ciuc). The importance of the ancient shrine of Mary in Csíksomlyó is due to the 650 year old Franciscan Monastery, the documents from 1444 which bestow shrine status on the place, the 500 year old statue of Mary with religious and artistic importance, and the institutions and initiatives of the Franciscan monks: the schools, the theatre, the library, the printing house etc. One of the biggest celebrations is the pilgrimage on the Saturday of Pentecost which has gathered hundreds of thousands of pilgrims since 1990. Through the media millions of Catholics can follow an important religious event.
One week prior to this event the Hargita County Council organises a series of cultural events throughout the county as well as a three-day traditional handicraft fair on the main square of the town of Csíkszereda (Miercurea Ciuc).
During the county days the Carpathian Basin’s biggest reunion of children and youth folk dancers, the Csűrdöngölő, takes place. This festival is much fun especially for the participating groups of children who are excited and looking forward to perform on the outdoor stage next to the fair.
