The period between the 6th of January (Epiphany) and Ash Wednesday (hamvazószerda) in Hungarian is called farsang (carnival). From religious point of view this is party and eating time before the Lent (40 days of fasting leading up to Easter).
In the towns around here, Székelyföld, the farsang celebrations usually mean that children in kindergarten and primary schools dress up in costumes and they have a party. Their mothers rent, buy or sew the requested costume. Our daughter was a black cat this year. :)
Teenagers and young people are not so much into it, but I guess this is just because they are teenagers. :) Anyway, some people like farsang, some not so much. :)

In villages farsang is much more colourful and fun and it is rooted to our folk traditions. It was prohibited during the 16th and 17th century because it had also erotic content. As you can see in the pictures below it still has this erotic scent. The main event of this whole partying period is the Farewell to the Farsang or the Farsang's Tail (farsangbúcsúztató resp.
In Hargita County the County Cultural Centre organises each year the farsangbúcsúztató and farsangtemetés , bringing together tradition preserving groups from the villages which perform in different settlements of the county. This year the villages, around Csíkszentgyörgy hosted the event. All host villages were responsible of welcoming the guests, preparing food, pálinka and all the necessary other stuff...all on voluntary basis ...Traditionally we eat donuts at farsang called (farsangi) fánk (pronounced like "funk"). They are yummy!!!

The folk wear of the Székely, the music, the dance, the characters of the farsang, the joy of people are just a bit of taste of this year's great party.
